Roger Eli is a former professional footballer who played in the Football League for Leeds United, Wolverhampton Wanderers, Crewe Alexandra, York City, Bury, Burnley and Scunthorpe United. Eli is perhaps best known for his stint at Burnley, where he won the Endsleigh Player of the Season when the Clarets won the Fourth Division Championship in 1992.
We had a chat with Roger to find out about his favourite football memories.
What is your favourite footballing moment?
Signing for Leeds United at the age of 16, the club that I supported as a youngster.
Being part of the side that won the 4th Division championship with Burnley AFC and winning the Endsleigh player of the Season & the Goal of the season.
What was your favourite goal?
Playing for Burnley against Derby County in the FA Cup and scoring an unstoppable header past the former England and two times European cup winner Peter Shilton. That goal won the goal of the season, but I have to say that the cross was inch perfect from strike partner Mick Conroy, a move that we would work on daily in training.
Who was your favourite footballer to play with?
Too many to mention, I had great relationships with many players from the clubs that I played with.
(We think your partnership with Mike Conroy was pretty formidable!)
Who was your most challenging opponent?
I played in a number of positions throughout my career. As a striker, I would have to say Garry Briggs at Blackpool AFC. He was athletic but very physical too. I usually ended up scoring against them but the greater challenge was to be able to leave the pitch with my cheek bones still in one piece (Ha-ha).
What's your favourite shirt?
As mentioned, it was a pleasure to be able to wear the white of Leeds United & the Gold and Black of Wolverhampton Wanderers.
But, my favourite shirt is most definitely the iconic 1991/92 Claret & Blue shirt that we wore in the championship season. The Clarets have always had great football kits, but that one was my favourite.
What's your favourite stadium snack?
On a cold winters match day, a cup of Bovril is perfect.
(Fan's Favourite agree with you here, Roger!)
